Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is taking action to build a greener, healthier and more sustainable Johannesburg this Arbor Month under the theme “My Tree, My Oxygen, Plant Yours Today.”

The 2026 Arbor Month initiative forms part of JCPZ’s broader Urban Forestry Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the environmental, social and economic value of trees while encouraging residents to play an active role in growing and protecting Johannesburg’s urban forest.

Throughout August and September, JCPZ regional teams will plant and distribute trees at parks, schools and community spaces across the city, turning the Arbor Month message into meaningful action.

Planting today for a greener Johannesburg tomorrow

Trees are an important part of a healthy urban environment. They provide shade, contribute to biodiversity, improve the character of public spaces and support more liveable communities.

However, building an urban forest is about more than simply putting trees in the ground. Trees need to be protected, watered and cared for if they are to grow and deliver benefits for future generations.

This is why the 2026 Arbor Month campaign is encouraging Johannesburg residents to move from awareness to action.

The message is simple:

Plant. Protect. Care. Grow.

Every tree planted is an investment in the future of the city.
