Description: Lavandula dentata is an evergreen perennial flowering plant growing 3 feet in height 90 cm tall and 5 feet in spread 150 cm wide and hardy to USDA zones 8 to 10. The whole plant is strongly aromatic with the typical lavender fragrance. Boasts all the great assets of common lavender with the added benefit of showy flowers and cute toothy leaves.
Leaves: It has greyish green, linear shaped leaves with toothed edges and a lightly woolly texture.
Flowers, fruits and seeds: It contains long-lasting narrow spikes of purple flowers crowned with pale violet bracts and has winged and ears appearance of the flower. Produce a dry fruit that splits into single seeded parts when ripe.
Flowering time: It can flower all year round, with peaks in fall and early winter.
Origin: Native to Mediterranean, Atlantic islands and Arabian Peninsula.
Uses: It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant much appreciated for the plastic and decorative ribbing with teeth of its silver green leaves. Extracted essential oil is used in perfumes, cosmetics, food preservative, hygiene products, aromatherapy, antimicrobial activities and its pungent compounds help to repel aphids. It can be used to add texture to the beds, borders, hedges, rock garden and it can be grown for its foliage in pots and containers. The flowers can be harnessed to make replacement scented softener for clothes.
Propagation: Lavandula dentata have been propagated mostly by seeds and are said to be recalcitrant to rooting when propagated by cuttings.
