Northern Cemetries
Region A, Zone 4

Waterval Cemetery is the first cemetery to be built since Avalon in Soweto in 1972. The new cemetery located on a hillside looking out over Midrand and Fourways. Providing an additional 200 hectares of burial grounds, it will service Midrand and Alexandra. There is room for 720 000 new burial sites.

As with other Johannesburg City Parks’ new cemeteries, the design of Waterval Cemetery incorporates the natural landscape and indigenous flora and fauna. The concept of Waterval is to create a natural-environment approach, low maintenance with water-wise plants and only low headstones or base stones allowed.

Building of the cemetery included a comprehensive road network; storm water, sewer and irrigation systems; lighting landscaping and demarcation of grave sites; ablution facilities; fencing; signage and security and construction of an administrative block. Maintenance Programme is every 14 days.
