Richard Cock

A renowned conductor and musician, Richard Cock worked in the music industry for most of his life. He is probably best known as the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa but also held positions as a producer for the South African Broadcasting Corporation, director of music of St Mary’s cathedral, and artistic director of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. He currently serves on the management team of the Phoenix Orchestra. He conducts throughout the country and is equally at home in concert halls working with legendary soloist like Jullian Lloyd Webber and the late Pavarotti. It is generally believed that he has done more than anyone in South Africa to popularize classic music and still implement innovative ways to introduce music to new audiences, currently through the umbrella body Richard Cock Enterprises which covers various activities connected by music.

The Phoenix Orchestra

Phoenix Orchestra was formed after the COVID pandemic when concerts relying on large numbers of people sitting in close proximity indoors were no longer an option. The Orchestra arose from a need to take orchestras into communities – private gardens, churches, schools and other open public spaces – so that the public could continue to experience classical music, enabling musicians to continue making music in addition to earning some much-needed income. The principles of the Phoenix Co Orchestra are to promote diversity, transparency within the sector, accessibility, and the love of classical music. During 2021 the orchestra performed across the province of Gauteng, bringing live music out of the concert halls and into various communities. Since then, the orchestra has gone from strength to strength, continuing its community concerts, many of which were repeat requests from schools or churches and adding larger events such as RMB Starlight Classics, and adding concerts with the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg to its growing list of performances.
